TYLER J. TANNER
Only the Beginning
AALM: When did you rst know you wanted to become an attorney? What drew you to this
career?
Tanner: I knew this before I
began college. I have always had a lot of respect for the legal pro- fession, and I knew that lawyers could thrive as creative problem solvers; anticipating obstacles and staying one step ahead. My interests and skill set seemed to line up, so I went for it. While the practice may not be as glamorous as I anticipated, for me it was un- questionably the right decision.
AALM: How is the practice of law di erent than your expecta- tions in law school?
Tanner: Not much. Here is why. I worked as much as I could throughout law school. I clerked at a maritime litigation defense rm for two years, and I also in- terned for a federal judge. With a young family to support in Mi- ami, I had to make money. Plus, I enjoyed working more than law school. As a result, I learned a lot about the practice and my expec- tations were tailored early. If any- body were to ask me, I would rec- ommend the same; get as much legal experience as you can before and throughout law school. at will ease the transition.
AALM: What drew you to your current rm? How would you de- scribe the culture there?
Tanner: Hamilton Miller & Birthisel is lled with good peo- ple and truly excellent attorneys at every level. e maritime liti- gation community in Miami is a small one, and I knew this com- ing in. I love Miami and its melt-
ing pot of cultures. at is one reason I decided to make it my home. is rm re ects that vi- brant diversity and fosters a wel- coming environment to build a practice. More importantly, how- ever, is our focus on hard work, understanding our client’s needs, and doing everything necessary to consistently exceed their ex- pectations.
AALM: Of the cases you’ve worked on or witnessed, what has stood out most in your mind?
Tanner: While I practice pri- marily in litigation, I have come to really value qualities of kind- ness, integrity, and respect in working with opposing counsel. I have learned that the con dent and proper use of these qualities in litigation is a great asset and can be incredibly e ective at re- solving cases.
AALM: What do you most hope to accomplish in the future?
Tanner: If I am fortunate enough to earn enough money to retire, I hope that I will not want to at that point. In other words, I hope to reach a level of comfort, trust, and camaraderie amongst my clients, colleagues, and the practice that makes outright re- tirement seem like a less desirable way to spend the rest of my life.
AALM: Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Tanner: I am blessed with an incredible support system. My wife, Amber, is truly an extraor- dinary woman, and I could not be more proud of my children, Tyson and Charlotte. We are all in this together, and it’s only the beginning.
